Members of global rights group Amnesty International lead hundreds of other activists wearing colourful masks in a march to celebrate the 16th International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, in Manila on August 8, 2010. The group says that there remains an urgent need to respect the basic rights of the world's many diverse indigenous tribes and peoples.

Children look for salvageable materials while submerged in water filled with charred items and ash after a fire gutted a sprawling shanty town in Malabon, part of Metro Manila, shortly before midnight on August 7, 2010. Firemen failed to save the more than 300 homes which went up in flames, as officials investigate the blaze in which no one was hurt.

Some 300 houses were damaged in Friday's fire, which was finally extinguished on Saturday, leaving 600 families homeless. While authorities are still investigating the cause, firefighters had a hard time going to the area due to roadworks and flooding, Malabon Fire Station Chief Investigator Alvin Torres said.

President Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino Jr. , said on July 21, 2010, that there is no water shortage and ordered agencies to look up causes of the water shortage in some parts of the capital, according to local media.
